Steve Barron was born in Dublin Ireland. He started in films as a camera assistant on epic productions such as Richard Donner’s ‘Superman’, Richard Attenborough’s ‘A Bridge Too Far’ and Ridley Scott’s ‘The Duellist’.
Steve Is a pioneer of music videos, his involvement starting as early as 1977 with videos for ‘The Jam’, ‘Human League’, and ‘Adam and the Ants’. His work, amongst others was to inspire the formation of MTV. In 1982 he conceived and directed the award winning ‘Billie-Jean’ – the first single of Michael Jackson’s incredible Thriller’ album. More awards for videos followed. Dire Straits’ ‘Money for Nothing’ won Best Video at the 1986 MTV Awards and A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me’ has collected countless festival prizes from, amongst others, Montreux, New York, Cannes and Acapulco.
In 1991 Steve’s return to the music video arena won him a Grammy nomination for Dire Straits’ ‘Calling Elvis’ and the Billboard Best Director award for Natalie Cole’s ‘Unforgettable’ duet with her father, which reached No.1 across the world, selling over 12 million albums on the way. 1992 brought another MTV Video of the year nomination, Def Leppard’s ‘Let’s Get Rocked’, for its innovative and unique use of computer animation.
Steve’s narrative director credits include the first independent movie to break the $100m box-office in the US ‘TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES’, UK World Cup hit ‘MIKE BASSETT–ENGLAND MANAGER’, the BFI released New York indie ‘CHOKING MAN’ and the TV mega-series’ ‘MERLIN’, ‘ARABIAN NIGHTS’ and ‘DREAMKEEPER’. He has won numerous awards including a DGA Directors nod and his films have been nominated for twenty-five Emmy’s and 5 Golden Globes.
